What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. The art was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan judo (which itself is derived from Japanese Jujutsu) in the early 20th century.
It teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique – most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person.
BJJ training promotes fitness, heightens body awareness through movement, enforces discipline, teaches self defence and is most importantly incredibly fun.
It is a system that can be practised by anyone of any age group and gender

At Godalming Brazilian Jiu Jitsu we pride ourselves on having a great Kids and Youth programme that will help the little champions to not just progress in Jiu Jitsu but in all areas of growing up. With the confidence to be themselves, pursue their personal goals no matter what they might be and to develop the discipline and focus to achieve success. All this while developing their fitness, physical abilities and martial arts skills for self defence or competition. Regular Kids Classes are suitable for 5 yrs to 16yrs.
Youth Specific Classes are targeted for 10yrs to 16yrs.

What to bring / What you need
Godalming Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy teaches Gi / Kimono and No Gi classes.
-For our Gi classes, the Gi or Kimono is used in our techniques that we teach hence having a good BJJ Kimono is essential. (Karate Taekwondo or Judo gis are not acceptable as the built and cut is different and cannot be used to perform the techniques and may even cause injuries)
-For No Gi Classes, clothing that is not too loose is highly recommended. Rashguards, shorts and legging tights are often worn as they are slim fitting, do not snag and comfortable to train in.
The correct Gis and No Gi equipment can be purchased from our instructors at a special discounted price for members (please ask the instructor for more info) or from our SHOP page.

For those just starting, please wear clothing that is not too loose that you can sweat in as there will be a lot of rolling around on the mats!

Adult Classes
Our Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes are suitable for all levels with no prior experience required and is perfect for you if you are looking to get fit, learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, acquire self defense skills or try your hand at body movement techniques.
We currently run 3 evening adult classes a week at the Broadwater School in Farncombe, Godalming which cater for anyone 16 years and above regardless of fitness level, male or female (LGBTQ+ friendly), young or old.

We can create bespoke 1 on 1 or small group private classes for Adults and Juniors to suit your needs. These sessions can be held at your private location or at our space if needed.
Prices start at only £50 for 1 but can be shared between 2 people or more. (£10 extra thereafter per person - up to 4 persons). Further discounts available for block bookings.
